A graduate from the University of Colorado at Denver, Sarah has a degree in Environmental Design and a master's degree in Landspace Architecture and Urban and Regional Planning. Currently a Landscape Architect, she designs new parks, renovates community playgrounds, and insures that land is being given for future parks and the betterment of the Denver community. She also serves on the Board of Directors for Pikes Peak Habitat for Humanity. Among her many philanthropic activities, she volunteers at Lifting Off Academy Child Care Center to remodel and renovate playgrounds in order to insure safe equipment for children.

Heidi Lamar

Self-described as "the accidental spa owner," Heidi Lamar purchased a commercial building that came with two tenants and a failing day spa. Enlisting her staff's help in learning the spa business, she eventually was rewarded by being named #7 on the "Phoenix Best Places to Work" list, and recently as the "Best Day Spa" by Phoenix City Search.

Humanitarian of the Year

Joyce Sterkel

Joyce established, owns and runs the "Ranch For Kids Project" a registered nonprofit corporation in the states of Wyoming, Montana and Maryland with 501(c)(3) status. She has established a Christian home for"at risk" Russian and other adoptees who may be experiencing difficulties in their new families in the U.S. This program was developed through joint cooperation with agencies and child welfare organizations where troubled children adopted from Russia and other countries could come for respite care and/or referral to licensed agencies for placement into new adoptive homes.

Sheila C. Johnson

Sheila C. Johnson, CEO of Salamander Hospitality, LLC, has enjoyed success in many areas. Co-founder of BET (Black Entertainment Television), she is also a partner in Lincoln Holdings, LLC, and RLJ Development. Lincoln Holdings, a Washington, DC based company, is the majority owner of the NHL Washington Capitals and the WNBA's Washington Mystics as well as a partner of the NBA's Washington Wizards and the state-of-the-art Verizon Center. Ms. Johnson serves on the Boards of Parsons The New School for Design, The Whitney Museum of American Art, VH1 Save the Music Foundation, and the United States Equestrian Federation. She also serves as a Global Ambassador for CARE, a humanitarian organization whose mission is to fight global poverty.

Given all the directions in which Sheila Johnson has expanded her empire, she never loses her focus on the problems of women in the world, be they women in high places in business or those struggling to make their lives—and those of their children—better in Third World villages. "There's a well-known song with a line that goes something like 'women carry the world on their hips,' and I'm reminded of it now, because I truly believe that women carry the weight of the world," says Johnson. "We have the power to truly make a difference; we just have to work to discover our capabilities and support one another."
